Estruc-
tures
Laboratory for Flexible Structures is a year-long program that explored management techniques for different cultural initiatives. In a political context where imagining possible futures can no longer be separated from the struggle over urgent present-day issues, we sought to bring together small and medium-sized spaces, initiatives, and collectives whose precarious situation and somewhat quiet work point toward other forms of organization—or even disorganization.
Held in 2017.
The search for other ways to finance their activities, to work collectively, to build communities, to blur the boundaries between audience and artist, and to broaden our understanding of what culture is, is ultimately a collective effort to create temporary zones of autonomy that sharpen social awareness and experiment with other forms of existence. These pockets of experimentation, scattered across different parts of the world, reinvent ways of being, dynamics, and uses of shared spaces, so that we are not reduced to mere consumers of services or of pre-established collective facilities.
From October 23 to 28, the program brings together national and international initiatives whose practices fall within the expanded field of culture (from the visual arts to cultural activism), centered on three main concerns: the first related to audiences (1), the second to the object of action (2), and the third to the time and spaces of that action (3).
(1) Isn’t the audience for these initiatives more the result of a collective construction than a preexisting target of the work itself? In other words, aren’t we talking more about the idea of building networks than about the idea of creating audiences? (2) Why and for whom do we work? To promote a certain type of artistic practice, strengthening civil society and inventing new ways of engaging in politics? To improve life in the surrounding area and generate income for the community? These questions suggest a restructuring of these very initiatives, which leads to the third concern. (3) If audiences are active agents in the results achieved and if the object of the work is a process of constant construction, how can these initiatives reinvent their relationships with time and space? What other genealogies and ancestral legacies should we reclaim? Where can we find the many experiences now erased from the official history of art? How can we adapt the programming of cultural spaces to current urgencies (by moving away from exhibitions, courses, and seasons)? To what extent can we work without a physical space? To what extent can we slow down the pace of the times in which we live?
